O'Reilly, Father Bernard, Hannibal, Missouri, to Archbishop John Mary Odin, C.M., New Orleans, Louisiana, 1861 September 17
Scope and Contents
A short time ago Father Daniel Houlahan Holihan arrived and gave a history of what led to his removal from Odin's jurisdiction. While he confesses his errors, he says they were ungenerously exaggerated. By some accident he lost the exeat on his way to Hannibal. His health is broken and O'Reilly fears that he has but a short time to live. He is now under the care of the Sisters at the Hospital, St. Louis. If he does recover he plans to spend a few weeks with the Jesuits and then to enter a new field. O'Reilly asks Odin to send him the best letter that he can. He believes his intentions are pure and good. It was his misfortune to have had difficulties with Father Hector Figari and with Father J.D. Flanagan Flanigan. Archbishop Anthony Blanc decided in his favor in the former and as Odin knows the nature of the present case, O'Reilly is sure he will do his best. He sends this and expects a reply through Bishop Martin J. Spalding. :: VI-2-e A.L.S. 2pp. 4to.
