Last year at the time of First Communion, Aubert told Blanc how the choir of St. Mary's had rejected the singers whom Aubert had invited. Blanc had replied that next year Aubert would be in charge to invite whom he wished. Mr . Calligeron 's daughter is making her First Communion; he has offered to sing. But Father Stephen Rousselon has objected, not wishing to oppose his mulatresses?. In any other circumstance Aubert would not insist but should one give in to these women? If Blanc does not give permission to the singers Aubert proposes it will be a proof that Blanc no longer wants him here and he will retire. If Blanc does not have a place for him Aubert asks permission to retire to the home of one of his friends while waiting for a place. P.S.
