De Bolle, Father John H., New Orleans, Louisiana, to Archbishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1856 March 15

Blanc's last letter discouraged De Bolle. He sees that Blanc has assigned him to St. Joseph Church although he had asked for the hospital exclusively. In Detroit, for 100 sick people, he was not attached to a church; he never thought that for 500 at New Orleans he would have that trouble. He came under the impression that Blanc would pay him $300 a year and that he would simply be lodged with the pastor of St. Joseph's because there was no residence for the hospital chaplain. Blanc speaks of extra services; he has not been absent one half day since he has been here. He is all alone; there are two others; they would not have to be gone at the same time. De Bolle has more to do than any of Blanc's priests. Foreseeing that he could not stay here and feeling more inclined to the religious life, two weeks ago he wrote to the Superior of the Lazarists to be admitted to the Congregation. :: VI-1-j A.L.S.
