She has had for a long time an uneasiness of conscience in relation to the duties of a mistress to her slaves Negroes. She is told that she is as responsible for them as she would be for her children. She has witnessed the beneficial results of the kind efforts of Father M. Francis Mazzuchelli who has given theirs, some 70 in number, an instruction twice a month. His leaving seemed to affect them most deeply. He counseled her to continue his instructions but this will be very difficult as Mr. Archinard objects. Mazzuchelli was gradually doing away with these objections and exercising a salutary influence.
