Murphy, now in the 33rd year of his episcopacy introduces Mrs. Brand, the bearer of this letter. She is of a very respectable family; her adhesion to the Catholic faith has been a source of affliction to her. Married to a Protestant gentleman she was mainly instrumental to the conversion of his daughter by a former marriage. This has caused her separation from her husband.
