Hackett has a letter of Blanc's to Bishop Michael Portier offering Hackett Alexandria or Covington with a wish that he would select the former. Two considerations prevent him from making a selection without again hearing from Blanc. He fears Portier has represented his knowledge of French in too favorable a light. Then Hackett might ask to change his location. If he did would Blanc give him an appointment in New Orleans? Portier well knows him from experience of ten years.
