Mégret, Father Anthony Désiré, Vermillionville, Louisiana, to Bishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1846 June 11
Scope and Contents
Mégret believes this letter will find Blanc returned home from Baltimore. On June 6, the trustees of St. John's of Lafayette met at the home of André Martin . It was resolved that the cemetery would be closed and locked while the Protestant cemetery is separated from the Catholic. It was also resolved that the church be locked provisionally. The president proposed something which will seem extraordinary to Blanc, that they turn over the property of the Church and its dependencies to Blanc as the way to establish peace. The church has no debts, but neither does it have anything in the treasury. Blanc would have the property but he would also have the expenses which might turn him against it because of the expenditures he has made for his own church. Mégret would then try to supply the money out of his own savings. He hopes this letter will be a mark of the good spirit of the trustees. :: V-5-e L.S. French 3pp. 4to.
