Odin, Bishop John Mary, Paris, France, to Bishop Anthony Blanc, New Orleans, Louisiana, 1846 January 11

Odin is at last in Paris after a long and rapid tour of Italy and Germany. He wrote Blanc from Rome. His stay there was only 22 days. He spent two weeks at Vienna, 3 days at Munich and reentered France at Strasbourg. His need to reproach Bishop Andreas Rãss took him there. The vicars-general of that diocese did harm to Texas; the five priests to whom they gave such untruthful exeats were men they wished to get rid of. The bishop signed without reading the documents. Odin spent 3 weeks at Lyons to get five ecclesiastics; his Eminence did not wish to give his consent. Odin saw Father Boué ; before he left Lyons Odin gave Boué 300 francs for Blanc. Blanc's nephew at St. Irenée expressed some fancy of rejoining Blanc but after talking with Boué no further mention was made. Odin stopped a moment at Father ? Janvier's. Blanc's brother who lives at St. Etienne came to see Odin there but Odin was headed for Valfleury and did not meet him. Janvier said all were well and gave him a letter for Blanc. His stay at Ambierle was very short. There is hardly a bourgeois family there except the youngest son of Mr. Deschaux who, a month ago, lost his wife. Mr. Thevenard is very infirm. Camillus Dépany seems very old. Father Charles bears up well enough except for his eyes; he gave Odin a letter for Blanc. The pastor of Changy is quite vigorous. The only daughter left by Auguste Deschaux is becoming a Sister of Charity at Paris. Father Charles? Cholleton is Master of Novices at the Marists; Father Gardette is honorary Superior at the big seminary; Fathers Baron, Grange, and Beaujolin are vicars-general. Blanc has probably received a letter from Cardinal James Philip Fransoni about the application of the inheritance of Father Augustin De Angelis . $1000 is destined for Blanc, $4000 for Texas and to Bishop Peter Richard Kenrick the cancellation of a bill he owed the estate. The Propagation of the Faith has allowed Odin 40,000 francs of which 32 are payable now and 8 in March. Odin will bring at least 20 persons with him. The Redemptorists gave three for the Germans. He hopes to leave in mid-February and arrive several weeks before the Council of Baltimore. He saw Father Stephen Rousselon 's brother; he did not give Odin a letter as he expects him to arrive soon from America. Bishop Mathias Loras is also expected at Lyons.
