J(evons), T(homas) S(eton): Buxton, (England) to (Monsignor) Robert (Seton: Jersey City, New Jersey), 1895 September 14
Scope and Contents
He cannot possibly tell in a letter all they have been doing and seeing. They were very glad to hear of cousin Louis (Joseph Sands)'s happiness. Monday they go on to Liverpool whence they sail for New York on September 21. J(evons) and Marguerite (Jevons) borrowed their aunt's dog cart and pony and drove to Wydale House where they were welcomed by Mrs. (Ellen L.) Cayley, a widow, and sister of Sir George, and her unmarried sister, Miss Aubrey. Staying with them was Dr. Hardy of Bournemouth. After showing them the house and two cups, once the property of the Miss Berries (Misses Bery) they drove to Brompton Hall but did not see Sir George Cayley who is very ill. J(evons) wishes he could manage to go with (Seton) next summer. He is thinking of going to South Africa; it seems to be the place for opportunities. J(evons) preceded his father and Marguerite to Paris; he did some mountain climbing. He had planned a trip by boat down the Rhone to Avignon and back; he was terribly disappointed that the boats were not running. At Fontainbleau he chose a very nice hotel. He also tried to find Mrs. Rachael Barrington and her mother but in vain. At Dieppe he stayed at the Grand H(otel) Francais; Count de Nevaro and Baron Rothanthil were there. J(evons) enjoyed a bathe in the sea before crossing to London. There he found his father and M(arguerite) already engaged in dinners, etc. He encloses a cutting from Truth (no enclosure). In looking over a book, "English Names," J(evons) found Seton under "see Seaton." On their second visit to London J(evons) and Marguerite payed a call on Sir Bruce (Maxwell Seton) and Lady Seton. Today J(evons) visited Haddon Hall with Marguerite and his cousin. His Aunt Lucy Hutton has given him a gold seal. He is going to have his initials cut on one side and perhaps the arms of Jevons or Seton on the other. Rex (Reginald Jevons) seems to have been going round visiting a great deal this summer while Ferdy(Ferdinand Talbot Roscoe Jevons) has been to Huntington. J(evons) calls T(emple?) P(rime?) "Old Sauerkraut." J(evons) has been reading a great deal lately. They sail in a week.
