He was desolated to have missed seeing her before her departure. He had tried to see her on Ascension Thursday; then the Messrs. Sartori of Rome were in Florence for a few days. He went out of town with them, intending to return on Sunday but did not get back until Monday when he read her note given by Mrs. Harper's negro to someone who did not know he was not in Florence.
