He writes at the request of Charles D. Smith who went by the nickname of Major Dwight Smith and who at one time was a student at Notre Dame. Smith was arrested for bigamy on the ground that he married Mrs. De Mar in Monroe without having a divorce from Marie V. Turner. Smith acted in good faith, as he believed he had obtained a divorce from the latter, who had been untrue to him. When he found that Mrs. De Mar was a notorious character, he left her.
