Howard, Timothy E., South Bend, Indiana, to James F. Edwards, Notre Dame, Indiana, 1885 December 25
Scope and Contents
Sunday Edwards asked Howard to send him any curiosities he might have. The enclosed no enclosures are all he thinks would be of interest to the library. Howard will not give them but only loan them. If Howard dies before calling for them they shall be the property of the University of Notre Dame. He prizes highly the letter from Halleck who was his idol among American poets then living. Later Howard got the letter and autograph from Longfellow and the autograph from Bryant. He got the Confederate $5 bill from a soldier on his way home from Vicksburg in 1863.
