Manning, Miss Agnes M., San Rafail, California, to Eliza Allen Starr, 1885 August 16
Scope and Contents
No doubt she has heard that Helen Hunt Jackson died here last week. The Indians have lost a true friend. H. H.'s fair mindedness to the Mission Period of California first attracted Miss Manning to her. She could not help wishing that she had died a Catholic. Father Angel Casanova who restored San Carlos mission said that no one helped him more than H. H. Miss Manning sends a copy of the verse she wrote as a tribute to the author of "Ramona". Note: Miss Manning's letter is copied in Starr's hand. It is not signed by Manning. But Miss Starr signs her part. :: XI-1-c A.L.S. 5pp. 12mo.
