Scope and Contents
Father has just received the enclosed letter from O'Beirne, former commissioner of immigration at Ellis Island. O'Beirne has just returned from an inspection of lands in North Carolina. He did not know Callaghan was going to participate in the Chicago Congress. Enclosure: 1893 Aug. 17 O'Beirne, Ja(me)s R.: N(ew) Y(ork), (New York) to Father ( ) Callaghan: (New York, New York) The land for colonization in North Carolina is fine. O'Beirne remained in Washington, under the care of his physician, Dr. Meagher. Since Father Callaghan and Mr. McCoole are to deliver papers on "Immigration" at (Columbian) Catholic Congress, O'Beirne would like to "have a say" too, possibly going as a delegate. He will act on Father Callaghan's advice, and asks if his plans fit in with Father McMillan and the Paulist Fathers.
