Scope and Contents

Eliza AllenStarr has for sometime been gathering materials for a life of the late Bishop John McMullen of Davenport. McGovern was associated with McMullen from boyhood and Starr has drawn facts about McMullen freely from him. She submitted her manuscript for McGovern's supervision and he finds them good for a brief biographical marrative, if that is Clarke's aim in publishing the lives of the Bishops of Chicago. Miss Starr is applying to him for the lives of other deceased Bishops James O. Van de Velde, Anthony O'Reagan and Thomas Foley . McGovern has been identified with the archdiocese since 1839 and will gladly furnish the materials. But he wants to know if the lives will be sketches or detailed histories because he is getting materials for a publication to be issued under the title of "The First Five Bishops of Chicago". Archbishop Patrick A. Feehan urged McGovern to do this. He intends to have a detailed account of the present condition of the archdiocese added to the lives of the bishops. Starr is aware of his purpose which is not for personal gain but one of a desire to perpetuate the memories of the pioneer bishops and missionaries of the diocese. He is the only one who can reach the facts of early days. Starr has asked McGovern to write Clarke. She is well. :: I-2-n A.L.S. 4pp. 12mo.
