Scope and Contents

McCormick acknowledges Clarke's card of Feb. 16. His article in the Emporium is the only one he has published on that subject. He intends to write up the local church history bringing it to the present. It will be issued in book form. The article in Clark's possession was intended to create a taste for local history and draw out the criticism of the older inhabitants in Trenton. In this it was successful and a recovering of the ground will see much new material added and mistakes corrected. McCormick found several mistakes in early local history. This is a fair sample of how Catholic history was treated when left to his opponents. The local historian must be at his post if the general historian is to do justice to his subject. Hence it is a cheering sign to see Catholic Historical Societies springing into existence in the large cities to preserve the records of Catholic pioneers. The State Library is in Trenton with a large collection of Colonial records and books not easily found elsewhere. McCormick also has access to the Secretary of State's office with its wealth of old original documents. McCormick offers to consult any of these documents or books that members of Clarke's society might be interested in. McCormick will try to get his book published this year. In May, 1886. Vicar General Father Anthony Smith will be 25 years in Trenton. If no one else makes the event notable. McGovern will by placing his book in the hands of the people. They will better be able to appreciate the great development of Trenton. If Clarke will send him circular on the United States Catholic Historical Society. McCormick will think over becoming a member. :: I-2-n A.L.S. 6pp. 12mo.
