McMaster's telegram to Elder reached New Orleans after Elder had left there but Bishop F.X. Leray of Natchitoches, Louisiana forwarded its contents to Elder under the permission of McMaster. The telegram was as follows, "The Holy Father yesterday mailed you Elder the cross of Cincinnati, Ohio. Elder thanks McMaster for informing him and hopes that the results of the appointment will be successful in the sight of God.
