Maus, Father John B., Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to James Alphonsus McMaster, New York, New York, 1878 February 20
Scope and Contents
Two years previous, while stationed in Mahanoy City, Maus bought olive oil and tapers from Messrs. Weaver and Sterry, but neither gave him satisfaction. The oil became black and muddy after 6 or 8 hours and the tapers did not last even 12 hours. These tapers, lighted at 9 o'clock in the evening are extinct by 6 o'clock the next morning. Maus tried these same products again in Philadelphia with the same results and so he has made purchases from a different firm advertising in the Journal. This new oil gave better satisfaction but Maus doubts its genuineness since it is off-color. He asks McMaster to aid him in his problem and feels justified in using lard oil for the time being. :: I-2-c A.L.S. 1p. 12 mo
