Wendell, J A T Chapman, B. Geary, Matthew Becker, John, Mackinac, Michigan, 1857 July 20
Scope and Contents
They certify that they are the only four justices of the peace for the township of Holmes, in the County of Mackinac, according to law. They further certify that for a period extending back one year from this date no criminal complaint was ever entered before any one of them either by Catherine Plant or any other person and no steps have ever been taken against Father Andrew D. J. Piret, formerly of this mission, of any criminal character whatever. Furthermore, as individuals they cannot believe that the priesthood of Father Piret is or could be tainted by such foolish and malicious charges against his honor and character. Certified copy written and signed by Augustin Hamelin of this testimony of the justices dated July 25, 1857. :: III-2-i A.L.S. D.S. Copy French 5pp. 4to. 12
