This list contains the names, arranged alphabetically, of all those whose correspondence is found among our collection of Thomas Ewing Papers. It includes both incoming letters, and loose drafts for and copies of outgoing letters. It does not include material other than correspondence, or items taken from other collections for filming with the Thomas Ewing Papers. Such items have been filmed separately, after the correspondence. Where one person has written several letters, each letter has been listed, by date, in chronological order after that person's name. Where several persons have joined to send one letter, separate entries have been made for each such person. The dates of each correspondent's letters are given in the same chronological order in which they are found on the microfilm. An exception has been made in the case of enclosures, which have been filmed immediately after their cover letters. In such cases, two dates have been given: first, the date of the enclosure; and, second, the date of the cover letter. For example, a February 12, 1848, letter from Cushman and Company to Goddard and Eastman is listed thus: 1848 February 12 (to Goddard and Eastman, enclosed in 1848 February 24, Goddard and Eastman to T.E.). On the microfilm, the user will find the letter by referring to the date of the cover letter. Letters dated only by month and year will be found at the beginning of that month; letters dated only by year will be found at the beginning of the year. Undated correspondence has been arranged alphabetically according to the author's last name and filmed immediately after the dated correspondence. Where letters have been addressed to Thomas Ewing, no indication of this fact has been given. However, where they have been addressed to other parties, the names of those parties are given, in parentheses, after the date of the particular letter.
