Periodic Financial, Personnel, and Statistical Reports from Missions
Scope and Contents
The periodic financial, personnel and statistical reports from missions are separated into three series: Hospitals and Homes for the Aged Owned and Operated by the Poor Handmaids up to 1936; Hospitals Not Owned by the PHJCs up to 1936; and Schools, Orphanages and Convents. The financial data of the hospitals and homes owned by the Poor Handmaids includes income and expenses of the institutions themselves, while the reports from hospitals not owned by the Poor Handmaids, as well as the schools and orphanages, give only the convent account, i.e., the income and living expenses of the sisters. In 1936 the property of all the hospitals and homes owned by the Poor Handmaids was mortgaged for a loan from the Northwest Mutual Insurance Company. From that time until 1962 the Province Financial Office was more directly involved in the affairs of the hospitals and homes. Financial reports from the hospitals and homes were included in a General Ledger and summarized in a Consolidated Cumulative Statements Ledger (located in Financial Office files). Hospitals not owned by the Poor Handmaids as well as the schools and orphanages continued to send in the usual convent account. Prior to 1936 (for the hospitals) or about 1933 (for the schools) personnel and statistical reports were included with the financial reports. The personnel reports give lists of sisters stationed at missions and report details of transfers to and from missions. The statistical reports give statistics for mission activity, including number of patients or residents for the hospitals or homes, or numbers of boys and girls taught for the schools. Some of the missions also give dates and descriptions of significant events, much like the Chronicles, but this is not standard. The financial, personnel and statistical reports were quarterly with yearly summaries.
