Scope and Contents

This series includes writings by Mestrovic, those about him by others, and works he collected. The writings by Mestrovic include unpublished manuscripts, drafts, and translations of poetry, a play, a novel, two books on Michelangelo, accounts of his travels, articles on his own work, interviews with him, and miscellaneous works on art and politics.

The writings about Mestrovic by others include short accounts of his life and art, bibliographies of works about him, and short biographies. News clippings, articles on art and politics, and clippings on the case of Cardinal Stepinac collected by Mestrovic are also filed with this series. An extensive collection of articles by and about Mestrovic, his art, and Yugoslav politics was assembled by the Snite Museum and is now housed in the Archives with other records from the Snite (see Snite Museum of Art - UART).

The personal documents include copies of agreements, circa 1951, between Mestrovic and the Yugoslav government on the disposition of the houses and artworks Mestrovic left behind in Yugoslavia, inventories of the artworks and other possessions left behind, inventories of his artworks at various locations, faculty contracts from Syracuse University and Notre Dame, book contracts, affidavits of support for immigrants seeking citizenship, his academic records, and passports. Oversize documents, including awards and diplomas, are stored in box 21.
