Oechtering arrived in Antwerp on May 19th. On May 28th he made his promised pilgrimage to the Shrine at Telgte. The atmosphere is very Catholic, even though the Cultur-Kampf is still going on. Oechtering assisted at the consecration of a new church at Mesum. Bishop Herman Dingelstadt of Munster took part in the ceremonies. The article referred to in the Pastor's Monthly is an answer to the one in the Quarterly Review entitled "Converts." It is plain O'Shea is meant. The Pastor's Monthly finds in some other papers attacks upon priests of German descent. Apparently it refers to the Cincinnati Telegraph . Father Walsh told him that a Catholic of Council Bluffs told him how the Catholics fell away because the priest would not allow them to have their own church. :: X-2-m A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo.

Oechtering was in Fort Wayne last week. He inquired about priests who were by sickness disabled to do parochial work. The bishop advised to given them the honor of Rector. Another two pages have been added to the article, at Hudson's request. After Christmas a Bazaar will be held which will take all of his free time. He received a letter from Father Thomas Scully, who says that the poor Diocese of Fort Wayne Indiana is ahead of the rich Dioceses of the East. There is an excellent article in the Cincinnati Warheitsfreund on Doctor Ludwig Windthorst the leader of the Center Party and the German Kulturkampf. Written by a Jew, and published in Boerse Gazette of Berlin, it is a condensed history of the persecution of the Catholic Church by Bismarck.
