She must come recommended by Blanc and qualified to take charge of all the usual higher English branches and Latin, if required. Haynes has an assistant qualified to teach French, Spanish, piano, harp, and guitar. The salary of $500 will be paid for the first year; $750 the second. There are now 20 to 25 young ladies engaged and the friends of the Institute hope to reach 30 or 40...

He assures McMaster that the word "Roman" was used inadvertently and it was not intended to be used offensively. For the last nine or ten years the Government has invited the different religious denominations to do missionary work among the Indians, giving to each denomination a separate field. Seeing in the last issue of the Freeman's Journal that governmental pressure has forced McMaster to advance the cost of his paper, Hayward cheerfully forwards the small deficit for the present year. Healy has loaned $100 for the building of the church here which he expects to be repaid about this time. As the church remains unfinished and there is no priest here, Blanc is his only redress. Father Michael O'Reilly can inform Blanc of the correctness of his statements. Father William Keegan of Brooklyn, New York can give the best account of Bishop David William Bacon 's youth and priestly life. Healy has in mind to put together some account of the Missions, etc. in Maine, but a record of Bacon's time would rely upon scanty materials. Healy sends him oils for consecration. He also sends balsam with enough also for McFarland's diocese. His messenger will return with them after the Mass but can make himself useful in ceremonies if McFarland desires it. The enclosed paper belongs to McFarland's Archives no enclosure. The oath was made at Worcester College and from there probably brought by their Bishop to the archives of the diocese. Healy hopes McFarland will excuse his asking a favor by telegraph last Saturday. After the ceremony at Troy he was called to New York City and he arrived in Boston too late to communicate by post.
