Archbishop Hughes wants McMaster to attend the soiree on Friday at seven o'clock. He is out west and doing well, keeping books and also selling. He came out with some Chicago men who have some fine gold property there. He will go to work for them soon. He supposes Edwards is expecting a letter from him but he is up at the lake and there are lots of small jobs for him to do around their new house. His father thanks Edwards for the kind treatment he received at Notre Dame. When he looks at the picture of Edwards' room, he wonders if the professor is thinking of his private secretary. S., and five towards the fund for sustaining a clerical representative of the "2nd Oder of the Hierarchy", at Rome. Father McNulty states that although he is unknown to McMaster, except as a subscriber, he is well known among the priests of the Eastern states, and by many of the West and South. He writes to ask how Seton, knows that in 1841 Father John Raffeiner built a church at Macopin . It was Father Donohue who built the church in 1830 and Father French of New York was delegated to come and bless it. Raffeiner did live in the church and it was to provide a room possibly for himself that gave rise to the statement that he built the church. He is about to enter the St. Louis Law School, and not being a graduate of any college, he needs a certificate from the President of Notre Dame, showing what courses he pursued there. It may be that the records of the university were destroyed in the fire, but he trusts the professors will remember enough.
