Mary Crowell Letter
A four-page folio-sized manuscript letter written on 28-29 April 1862 by Mary Crowell of Nora, Illinois. Much of the letter is given over to news of members of Co. E, 15th Illinois Infantry, recently engaged at the battle of Shiloh.

The collection includes more than 50 manuscript letters written during the Civil War by Pvt. John William Masterson, Co. A, 133rd New York Infantry, as well as later papers relating to Masterson's service and to his son William and daughter Ida.

Sixteen personal letters written by the brothers John Nathaniel Peed and James Oscar Peed, during their Civil War service in Co. I, 9th Virginia Cavalry (CS). Many of John Peed's 14 letters were written in 1864-65, from the environs of Petersburg.

Thirty-one personal letters written between members of the Price family of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Illinois during the American Civil War. The letters are notable for their Copperhead and anti-abolitionist sentiments.

A group of 12 letters written by the Western Pennsylvania Quakers John and Joseph Pugh during the Civil War. Included are 6 letters written by John during his service aboard the U.S.S. Quaker City, of the navy's East Gulf Blockading Squadron.

A small group of papers originating with the Read family of the central Shenandoah Valley in Virginia. Included are 28 letters written by three different family members during the Civil War: Confederate States soldier Thomas Griffin Read, Co. I, 33rd Virginia Infantry (10 letters); his wife Martha White Read, of Augusta County (15 letters); and the CS artilleryman John Henry Read (3 letters).

A personal letter written from Columbus, Ohio on 25 August 1863 by Confederate Col. Richard C. Morgan, 14th Kentucky Cavalry, following his capture on John Hunt Morgan's Indiana-Ohio Raid. The letter is directed to sister-in-law Martha Ready Morgan, John Morgan's wife.
Robert S. Edwards Papers
Around 60 items, mostly manuscripts, with a bearing on the Civil War service of Lt. Robert S. Edwards of the 48th New York Infantry. Among the 45 personal letters are 14 written by Edwards and 22 directed to him by his brother and sister-in-law, Ogden and Nellie Edwards, then living in the Philippines. There are also a number of items relating to Robert Edwards's death (at Fort Wagner in Charleston Harbor) and post-mortem arrangements.
Samuel T. Reeves Correspondence
A family correspondence of 31 items whose principal author is Sgt. Samuel T. Reeves, writing as a member of Co. C, 80th Indiana Infantry. Many of the letters date from the spring of 1865, when Reeves was convalescing at Camp Dennison, Ohio.
Sarah Stilson Correspondence
Letters written by and to Sarah Stilson, a teacher in New York State, during the Civil War. At the heart of the group is a lively correspondence of 25 letters between Stilson and Oliver Waldo West, a Union cavalry officer.

A group of seven Civil War era letters and notes written by two members of the Shriver family of Owings Mills, Maryland. Much of the content relates to Thomas Herbert Shriver, who served at Gettysburg with the 1st Virginia Cavalry (CS) and subsequently attended the Virginia Military Institute.

A group of 18 family letters, 14 of which were written in 1862-63 by Confederate Lt. Col. William W. Sillers of the 30th North Carolina Infantry. The letters are directed to Sillers' sister, Frances Sillers Holmes, in Sampson County, North Carolina.
Southy L. Savage Letter
A letter written on 3 May 1864 by Southy L. Savage, as a member of the Confederate States Signal Corps. Savage describes his activities over the previous months, when he was stationed along the Potomac in King George County, Virginia.
Taylor Family Correspondence
Five letters written during the summer and fall of 1864 by the brothers (and Confederate cavalrymen) Jonathan Gibson Taylor and Robert Walker Taylor, of Daviess County, Kentucky. All were written from Federal prisoner of war camps, at Louisville, Rock Island, and Camp Douglas.
Thomas Benton Alexander Diary
A short-entry Civil War manuscript diary of Confederate States soldier Thomas Benton Alexander, written as a member of the 1st Tennessee Heavy Artillery Regiment, Company B (3rd). Much of the content dates from the final year of the war, when Alexander was captured at Mobile Bay and imprisoned at Elmira, New York.

A Civil War manuscript diary of Confederate States trooper Thomas J. Barb, written as a member of the 1st (Dobbin's) Arkansas Cavalry Regiment. Entries extend from 18 June to 11 September 1863 and include accounts of several key engagements in Arkansas, including the attack on Helena and the defense of Little Rock.
Thomas Kemp Cartmell Diary
A personal diary maintained by Confederate veteran Thomas Kemp Cartmell, mostly during the late war years and Reconstruction, 1864-1866. The entries were written at the Cartmell family estate, "Retirement," in Frederick County, Virginia.
William Cline Diary
A volume including manuscript diary entries dated from August 1863 to October 1864 written by Civil War soldier William Cline, as a member of Co. B, 73rd Ohio Infantry. The book also includes a 53-page memoir chronicling Cline's service from 1861-1863.
