Biographical / Historical

The Sokol movement was founded in Prague, then located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the 1860s. Sokol exhibitions included large-scale coordinated and synchronized athletic, gymnastic, and phyical education routines for men, women, and children. Organizers hoped the events would develop community spirit and encourage national unity. The 1948 XI. Slet (11th All-Sokol Gathering) was the first since 1938 and attracted hundreds of thousands of participants and more spectators. After 1948, the new Communist government of Czechoslovakia banned the Sokol movement. Sokols re-emerged in the 1990s after the fall of the Communist government.
