Content Description

This collections includes 13 small-format baseball scorebooks and numerous loose scoresheets with baseball games scored by Ken Smith (1902-1991) of the New York Mirror newspaper. Most recorded games were either home or road games involving the New York Yankees or New York Giants in the 1950s and early 1960s. Some scoresheets also includes printed box scores or other clippings. In addition to traditional baseball scorekeeping, many game sheets also contain notes about the game by Smith. Formats include scorebooks and clippings.

Biographical / Historical

Ken Smith (1902-1991) was a sportswriter for the New York Mirror newspapers for about forty years. Smith began covering baseball for newspapers in New York City in the 1920s and soon got a job with the Mirror reporting on the New York Giants baseball team. He covered the Giants until the team relocated to San Francisco in 1957. He subsequently covered the New York Yankees. Smith was an active member of the Baseball Writers' Association of America (BBWAA), serving as its Secretary-Treasurer for many years. When the Mirror ceased publication in 1963, Smith became the Director of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. He received the J.G.Taylor Spink BBWAA Career Excellence Award in 1983. Smith died in 1991.
