Tommy Armour and Herb Graffis Golf Manuscripts
Content Description
This collection consists of manuscript drafts of articles, columns, and a book about about golf by longtime collaborators golfer Tommy Armour (1896-1968) and sportswriter Herb Graffis (1893-1989). The bulk of the items relate to a regular golfing column titled, "Play Better Golf" that ran for many years under Armour's byline in the Chicago Tribune. In addition to typescript drafts, the materials include publication schedules and some correspondence between Armour and Graffis about the column. Many of the typed drafts include edits, corrections, suggestions, and notes. The collection also includes a draft of the book Tommy Armour's ABC's of Golf, as well as several articles about golf.

Biographical / Historical
Thomas Dickson "Tommy" Armour (1896-1968) was a Scottish-born golfer who competed for much of his career in the United States. After an accomplished amateur golf career in Great Britain, Armour moved to the U.S. in the 1920s and turned pro in 1924. During his professional career he won 25 PGA events, including three majors—the US Open (1927), the PGA Championship (1930), and the British Open (1931). Armour mostly retired from competition in the mid-1930s and worked as a golf pro and golf coach at several golf courses around the country. With his longtime collaborator sportswriter Herb Graffis, Armour prolifically published golf instructional material, including long-running newspaper columns, numerous articles, and several books. The partnership continued until Armour died in 1968. He was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1976.

Herbert Butler "Herb" Graffis (1893-1989) was a long-time American golf writer and adminisrator. Graffis began his sportswriting career in Chicago for the Chicago Times and Chicago Sun Times. With his brother. he founded the magazines Chicago Golfer and Golfdom. He helped found the National Golf Foundation, the Golf Writers Association of America, and other golfing organizations. Graffis partnered with professional golfer Tommy Armour to publish much golf instructional material. The pair collaborated on long-running newspaper columns, numerous articles, and several books. The partnership continued until Armour died in 1968. Graffis was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1977.
