Biographical / Historical

The Sokol movement was its founded in Prague, then located in the Austro-Hungarian Empire, in the 1860s. Sokol exhibitions included large-scale coordinated and synchronized athletic, gymnastic, and phyical eduation routines for men, women, and children. Organizers hoped the events would develop community spirit and encourage national unity. The 1938 X. Slet (10th All-Sokol Gathering) attracted hundreds of thousands of participants and more spectators. The event was widely seen as an act of defiance against the encroachments of Nazi Germany.
