Content Description

This collection includes research created by James Edmund Harting about the history of sports and recreation in England. It includes one copy of the 1834 edition of Joseph Strutt's The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England owned by Harting. Harting extensively annotated Strutt's book with notes, clippings, and other research. The volume originally contained hundreds of tipped and inserted clippings and other material that have mostly been relocated to folders. Based on his notes and research material. Harting may have intended to publish an updated or edited version of Strutt's book, but no such publication ever appeared.

James Edmund Harting (1841-1928) was an English naturalist and sporting journalist also remembered for being one of the era's authorities on falconry. He published several books during his lifetime, mostly about birds and ornithology. He also had an interest in sports and recreation, publishing the book, Essays on Sport and Natural History. in 1883.

Joseph Strutt (1749-1802) was an English engraver, author, and antiqurian. He researched and wrote extensively about English cultural history, and his 1801 book, The Sports and Pastimes of the People of England was frequently reprinted and was long considered one of the most influential books on the topic.
