Biographical / Historical
Armonía Somers (1914-1994) was a novelist and pedagogue born in Pando, Uruguay on October 7, 1914. She graduated from the University of the Republic in 1933 with a degree in pedagogy where she then started her career in teaching.
In 1950, her work with the Inter-American Seminar of Primary Education began when she was sent as a delegate of the Pedagogical Museum of Montevideo and eventually became a delegate to the Organization of the American States (OAS) and UNESCO. Somers was additionally invited to work with the government of France on prison system organization and, in 1960, was invited to move to France to study operations and organization of rehabilitation and correctional facilities. She then represented Montevideo at the United Nations in 1962 for the Seminar on Education for Development and Social Progress where she was appointed the director of the Library and Pedagogical Museum in Uruguay. Somers was the director of the National Center for Educational Documentation from 1962-1971 until she retired.
Alongside her work as a pedagogue, Armonía Somers was a novelist and member of Generación del 45. La mujer desnuda (1950) was her debut novel and was met with much criticism and scandal due to its erotic nature. She published novels and short stories intermittently between her work until she retired in 1972 to turn her attention to her literary ambitions. Her final novel, El hacedor de girasoles, was published in 1994.
Armonía Somers died on March 1, 1994 in Montevideo, Uruguay.
