Content Description

The primary item in this collection is one personal scrapbook kept by Princeton University football player John R. DeWitt during his time on the team from 1901-1903. The scrapbook includes news clippings, ephemera, photographs, telegrams, and other items. The collection also includes a few loose items. Materials in the scrapbook are chronologically arranged, and cover the 1902 and 1903 football seasons (with emphasis on the 1903 victory over Yale) and the 1903 and 1904 seasons in track and field.

Biographical / Historical

John R. DeWitt (1881-1930) played football at Princeton from 1901-1903. A talented lineman and kicker, he was elected captain by his teammates in 1903. Walter Camp selected DeWitt as an All-American in 1902 and 1903. During the 1903 season, DeWitt led Princeton to an udnefeated season capped off by a 11-6 victory over rival Yale University. DeWitt also competed in the hammer throw at Princeton, and won a silver medal for the United States at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics.
