Scope and Contents

Collection of 117 candy wrappers from different Soviet republics, dating to the NEP (New Economic Policy) period in the 1920s and early 1930s and produced by then-nationalized confectionery factories in Moscow (Russia), Leningrad (Russia), Staryi Oskol (Russia), Voronezh (Russia), Kiev (Ukraine) , Kharkiv (Ukraine), Kherson (Ukraine), Odesa (Ukraine), Baku (Azerbaijan), Tbilisi (Georgia) and other cities. The collection features a wide range of subjects. Some wrappers feature Soviet insignia, including red banners and stars, and depict “ordinary” Soviet socialist industrial workers, blacksmiths, coal miners, pioneer youth, and peasants. Some wrappers also reproduce popular motifs from the pre-Soviet period, including fruits, animals, small children, fairy tales, flowers, and idealized female figures. Stylistically, the wrappers reflect diverse designs ranging from Art Nouveau to Constructivism and Avant-garde. Some are printed in monochrome on inexpensive paper, while others utilize chromolithography. Most wrappers were purposed for caramel candies, but there were also a small number intended for chocolate, fruit- or liqueur-filled varieties. Additionally, the collection includes wrappers produced for export, as indicated by the “Made in the USSR” label.
