Biographical / Historical

The Indianapolis 500 is an annual automobile race conducted at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in Speedway, Indiana, near Indianapolis. The first dirt track was built in 1909 and was soon paved with bricks lending the track the nickname of the “Brickyard.” After hosting hot air balloon races, automobile races, and motorcycle races of various lengths, the first Indianapolis 500 was run in 1911. Since its inception, the race has been held on or near Memorial Day Weekend in late May. The race was not contested in 1917, 1918, 1942, 1943, 1944, or 1945 due to American participation in World War One and World War Two. Over the years, the Indianapolis 500 has become one of the most popular and most important professional automobile races.
