Scope and Contents

The Robert J. Hubbard and Family Photograph Album comprises photographs of the Hubbard family, ministers, American Civil War soldiers, commercial photographs, and more. The majority of images are dated between 1860-1869, with persons primarily being identified in pencil.

The album includes the following family members, Robert J. Hubbard (1830-1904), Frederick Hubbard (1817-1895), Mary Hubbard Litchfield (1825-1856), Caroline Hubbard Wolcott (1828-1867), Mary Wolcott (1859-1941), Bela Hubbard (1814-1896), and others. Included are images of Abraham Lincoln and General George B. McClellan taken by photographer Matthew Brady. There are also photographs of soldiers such as Lt. Colonel Shumway and General Robert Anderson. Commercial prints are included, with many images depicting Bible scenes or prayers. Additionally, the album includes photographs of the Stryker and the Ten Eyck family.

Biographical / Historical

Robert James Hubbard (1830-1904) was born on May 31, 1830 in Utica, New York. In 1849, he began working at the brokerage firm Southworth & Litchfield. Hubbard married Anna Foster Burr Hubbard (1837-1884) in 1863 and, together, they had one child, Robert Frederick Hubbard (1876-1949). In 1875, they moved to her hometown of Cazenovia, New York, where he became heavily involved in the Cazenovia Library Society. He was a lifetime member of the New York Historical Society and was a benefactor of the Cazenovia Public Library where, in 1894, he donated a mummy he purchased in Egypt. Hubbard died on December 18, 1904 in Cazenovia, New York.
