Scope and Contents

This collection consists of about 2,400 college football game programs dating from the nineteenth century until 1939. The collection emphasizes prominent major college football teams, but hundreds of different four-year colleges from all parts of the United States are represented. Holdings for schools from the West are particularly strong. Most of the programs are from after 1921 with fewer than 100 programs for games from 1920 or before. The programs typically contain pictures, articles, and statistics about the players on the teams. Most programs also include pictures and information about coaches, other team personnel, data about the participating schools, and advertisements. The programs tend to become longer and more substantial through the years. The collection also includes some scorecards, which noted by the designation (sc) on the finding aid. Scorecards typically included little information beyond team rosters. This collection excludes programs from bowl games and all-star charity games.

Biographical / Historical

Scorecards and programs for football games were first printed in the late nineteenth century for fans to keep track of the game and for teams to publicize their games and their players. Scorecards included space for fans to keep score, and many scorecards featured pre-printed lineups. Through the years, scorecards became more substantial and sometimes evolved into the multi-page published game programs that were common during the twentieth century.
