Scope and Contents

This collection consists of 75 scrapbooks mostly covering professional boxing with some amateur boxing content, as well. The scrapbooks were compiled by an unknown person and contain clippings dating from the 1920s through the 1970s. Sources include Detroit daily newspapers, The National Police Gazette, and a variety of other weekly and monthly magazines but citations are rarely included. The collection is divided into several roughly chronological, multi-volume series. 21 volumes focus exclusively on the heavyweight division 1935-1975, including 10 “Notes on Joe Louis” scrapbooks and three scrapbooks devoted to Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali. Another series of 46 volumes, entitled "Odds and Ends on Boxing," cover events in all weight classifications, from 1928 to 1975. These scrapbooks have an emphasis on feature articles and retrospective or topical material. At the end of the collection, there are five scrapbooks with cartoons and comics about boxing, two scrapbooks about wrestling, and one scrapbook covering amateur boxing in Detroit. The scrapbooks have been professionally bound and most measure approximately 10 x 11.5 inches and average about 70 leaves with clippings on both the recto and verso.

Formats include scrapbooks and clippings.
