Scope and Contents

This collection contains about 75 programs issued for amateur golden gloves boxing tournaments. The programs usually contain at a minimum biographical and statistical information about the boxers involved in the tournament. The programs tend to become larger and more substantial over the years. Some programs also contain information about trainers, managers, referees, the venue, and historical information. The majority of the programs are from the 1930s through the 1960s with few examples from earlier or later years. Some of the programs are for state and regional Golden Gloves tournaments; some programs are from national Golden Gloves tournaments; and some are from international or inter-city Golden Gloves tournaments. Formats include programs.

Biographical / Historical

In 1923, sportswriter Arch Ward of the Chicago Tribune organized a city-wide amateur boxing tournament in Chicago. Four years later, in 1927, Paul Gallico of the New York Daily News organized a similar city-wide amateur boxing tournament in New York City that he named the Golden Gloves. In 1928, the Chicago Tribune again sponsored an amateur boxing tournament and challenged the winners of the New York tournament in the first inter-city Golden Gloves tournament. As Golden Gloves grew in popularity, newspapers in other cities around the country sponsored tournaments, the winners of which would often travel to compete in the Chicago and News York Golden Gloves contests, turning the annual popular inter-city Chicago-New York Golden Gloves meet into a tournament of champions of sorts. The Chicago Tribune and many other newspapers withdrew their sponsorships in the 1960s, leading to the formation of the Golden Gloves Association of America, which sanctioned regional and state competitions and coordinated a true national championship tournament. Although previously reserved only for men, Golden Gloves began sanctioning women’s boxing competitions in the 1990s.
