Scope and Contents

The Cristero Rebellion Martyrs photo album is a set of 32 silver gelatin photographs, each with a leaf of accompanying text. The photos are loosely housed in faded black wrappers measuring 4.5 x 6.5 inches. Many of the images in the collection are 3 x 5 inch portraits of Cristero activists and martyrs executed under authority of Mexican president Plutarco Elías Calles. The collection includes photos depicting priests such as José Mora y del Río, Archbishop of Mexico (exiled to San Antonio, Texas in 1927) and Father Gumercindo Sedaño (executed 27 or 28 September 1927). The album also includes photos of Father Miguel Pro (beatified 25 September 1988), Luis Segura Vilchis, Humberto Pro, and Juan Tirado Arias, all of whom were implicated in a failed attempt on the life of former Mexican president Álvaro Obregón, in November 1927. Also represented is Anacleto González Flores, a lawyer and active member of the member of the Asociación Católica de la Juventud Mexicana (ACJM) and the Unión Popular (UP). Images of priests and lay devotees active in Jalisco, Guanajuato, and Zacatecas are also present. The album also contains some non-portrait-style photos. Along with a photo of the executed priest, Gumercindo Sedaño, for example, is an image of the bodies of five "fanatics" who were executed with him, hanging from telegraph poles at the train station C. Guzmán in Jalisco. The accompanying text leaves provide biographical information on each of the Cristeros and laud their devotion and sacrifice in the face of religious persecution.
