Biographical / Historical

Mary T. McCouattria (1877-?) received her education at the Presbyterian Parochial School in Rome, Georgia, before attending the Barber-Scotia College in Concord, North Carolina. McCouattria remained at the college as an instructor in dress-making before returning home to Rome in 1908 due to her mother’s illness. She began her teaching career in Rome as a substitute teacher at the first black elementary school in Rome, Georgia, and continued to teach for forty-four years, retiring in 1952.
