Scope and Contents

This collection documents the activities of the Charabanc Theatre Company, active from 1983-1995.The Charabanc Theatre was founded in Belfast, Northern Ireland by five actresses: Eleanor Methven, Marie Jones, Carol Scanlan (Moore), Brenda Winter, and Maureen McAuley. The company was a significant presence in Irsh theatre, and used improvisational script development in innovative ways to bring its plays to the community, as well as carrying out extensive reseaerch, interviewing community members as well as using archives and traditional historical resources.

Notable productions included in this collection include; Lay Up Your Ends written by Martin Lynch and Marie Jones, A Wife, A Dog, and a Maple Tree written by Sue Ashby, and The Girls in The Big Picture, Now You're Talking, and Gold in the Streets by Marie Jones.

Materials include black-and-white photographs, scripts, storylines, posters, pamphlets, programs, clippings, articles, a press release, correspondence, manuscripts, poems, songs, notes, conference materials, audiocassettes, and videocassettes. Some materials are in electronic format.
