III. Photographs
Scope and Contents
The photographic component of the Pfefer Collection includes an estimated 13,500 items. Almost all are wrestling related. The majority are promotional portraits of individual wrestlers, tag teams, or other figures; most commonly, these pictures are gelatin silver prints in an 8 x 10-inch format. There are many second-generation images, and a fair number of duplicates. Overall, formats range from small snapshots to oversized images printed and mounted for wall display. There are also a small number of film-based negatives. Very few photographs are dated, but many of the subjects are identified in Pfefer's distinctive hand. Some photos, especially those of wrestlers whom Pfefer managed, were originally housed in manila envelopes of clippings and other ephemera on that wrestler; these images have been removed to Series III. Many other photos appear not to have been generated or acquired in the normal course of Pfefer's work, but actively collected; hence the inscription "From the Museum Collection of Jack Pfefer" that sometimes appears on the backs of pictures. Several of the photographic sub-series found here were held by Pfefer as independent topical collections: i.e., "Belts" (ii); "Ethnic Files" (iv); and "Before and After" (v). Photographic prints may also be found in Series VII (Correspondence), as enclosures in letters.
