Scope and Contents

From the notes of Dr. Catherine Perry: Louis Lefebvre was a Catholic poet, novelist and literary critic, who wrote for the journals La Nouvelle Journée and La Muse Française. Noailles thanks him for his article on her poetry (perhaps on her latest volume Les Forces éternelles, 1920). She also attempts to correct his perception of her. She says her heart is "very different from the one [he] seems to know!" This heart "lives outside myself and for the love of all! ... this self is extended to the whole universe ... but it is the courage of the poet to veil his distress and his wisdom with jubilation and to be - outside those moments when the Angel pours inspiration - the most human of humans, the one who belongs to all. ... Always sick since childhood I have fought fate through these songs of refusal and audacity, and if I haven't yet, in my books, expressed this 'outside the self' that my life is, it is because the soul is reserved."
