Scope and Contents

This series consists of documents related to cofradias (similar to guilds or fraternities) in 19th century Cuba. Managed by the Catholic Church, these groups played diverse roles in Colonial Cuba for all free social classes, each with its own hierarchy of laymen. Included in this series are cofradias or free blacks and Pardos in Cuba, as well as co-ed cofradias in various regions.
