Correspondence, memorabilia, drafts, clippings, mimeographed notes and handouts; notebooks of John Oesterle; a Polish translation of one of his books, Etyka ; files from courses he taught; correspondence between the Oesterles and Charles de Koninck; personal files of Jean Oesterle representing among other things her work as managing editor of The New Scholasticism ; with drafts of her translation of St. Thomas Aquinas' Disputed Questions on Evil (De Malo) , which was published by the University of Notre Dame Press.

Also offprints of articles written by or received by John Oesterle and mimeographed, computer-printed, or xeroxed articles; copies of The New Scholasticism 1951-1990 (incomplete) with some notes; publications of the American Catholic Philosophical Association; and a copy of Logic: The Art of Defining and Reasoning (second edition 1963) by John Oesterle. Photographs consist mostly of slides representing European travels of the Oesterles, with some Notre Dame (Indiana) slides, and a photo album.

Background

Students of Charles DeKoninck; graduates of Laval University; editors of The New Scholasticism; translators of works of St. Thomas Aquinas. Starting in 1953 and until his death in 1977, John Oesterle served as a professor of philosophy at Notre Dame. He was appointed editor of The New Scholasticism in 1966. He died in 1977. Jean Oesterle served as managing editor of The New Scholasticism and translated works of St. Thomas Aquinas. She died in 2001.
