Background
Born 7 April 1931, A. Edward Manier graduated from the College of Science at the University of Notre Dame in 1953. He earned an MA (1956) and a Ph.D. (1961) in Philosophy from St. Louis University. From 1956 to 1959 he served as a Lecturer in Chemistry and Biology at Webster College. He joined the Philosophy Department at the University of Notre Dame in 1959, becoming an Assistant Professor in 1962, an Associate Professor in 1967, and a Professor in 1988.
