Background
Roman Catholic Diocese in Western Pennsylvania. Michael O'Connor served as the first bishop (1843-1860), with Joshua M. Young serving briefly as bishop in 1853. Michael Domenec served as bishop (1860-1876), followed by John Tuigg (1876-1889), Richard Phelan (1889-1904), J.F. Regis Canevin (1904-1921), and Hugh C. Boyle (1921-1950). In 1876 a See of Allegheny was created, but it did not flourish and was reunited with Pittsburgh in 1877.
