Background
The Diocese of Natchitoches was established in 1853 with Augustus Mary Martin as its first bishop (1853-1875) and Francis Xavier Leray as its second bishop (1876-1883) and administrator apostolic (1883-1885). The name of the see was changed to the Diocese of Alexandria in 1910.
