Background
Henry Joseph Richter (1838-1916) was the first bishop of Grand Rapids, Michigan (1883-1916). Born in Germany, Between 1854, when he came to America, and 1860, he studied at St Xavier's College in Cincinnati, at St Joseph's College in Bardstown, Kentucky, and at Mount St Mary's Seminary in Cincinnati. He completed his education in Rome at the Pontifical North American College (1860-1865) and earned a Doctor of Sacred Theology there. Ordained in 1865, he served as a professor and vice-president at Mount St Mary's Seminary until Pope Leo XIII appointed him bishop of Grand Rapids.
Frederick H. Ruessmann served as pastor of St Mary of the Assumption Church in Provement (Leelanau County), Michigan, from 1891 to 1895.
